Men's Autumn Meeting report Despite a forecast of pouring rain all day, 57 players lined up for the morning of the Autumn Meeting. Drizzle turned to rain but, after about five holes, the weather brightened up and stayed that way until lunch. The course was playing long and the worms had been active so Preferred Lies were in operation. General consensus was that around a nett 70 would win and that is how it turned out with Rob MacDonald carding a nett 69 to win the Way Challenge Salver. In the scratch competiton, Ian Oakes won the Denham Putter with a gross 74 thus completing the set of both the Spring and Autumn meeting in the same year. The Don Howard Salver, for the best aggregate nett Spring and Autumn meeting score was won by Al Gordon following up on his win in the Spring Meeting. Pat Murphy O'Connor (2018 Vice-Captain) stood in for the Captain to present the trophies after lunch, as well as presenting Mark Giblin with the Turtle Dove as the inaugural winner of the Winter League. Lunch was, as usual, excellent. A disappointingly small number of people played in the foursomes for the Rowley Morris Tankards after lunch and had to really shift round the course as, with the meeting having been put back to October and a gloomy day, light was fading fast after 6pm as the players came in. The Tankards were won by Mike Ewart & Richard Carey with 32 points. |
